The US Open is a golf tournament staged by the United States Golf Association. It is played every year, and the first event took place in 1895. The only time the tournament was not played was during both the first and second World Wars, making the 2019 tournament the 118th in its history. The US Open is one of the four so-called majors of the golfing calendar. These are simply the four most important annual tournaments, and as such they include the best players and offer the highest amount of prize money.
